At Only 25, Jazz Phenom Esperanza Spalding Has The Ultimate ‘X-Factor’
Spalding, encouraged by her single mother, began playing violin at age five. A decade later she started playing bass, running blues patterns during Sunday-afternoon nightclub sessions with Portland singer/guitarist Sweet Baby James Benton. The young bassist joined a half-dozen bands, including local indie rock/pop group Noise For Pretend. Prior to attending Berklee, she spent a year studying classical music at Portland State University. In summer 2005, at age 20, she began teaching at Berklee, making her one of the college’s youngest-ever faculty members (Pat Metheny famously taught there at 19). On the horizon, she is developing two Berklee courses: one on singing and playing, and another on transcribing as a tool for learning harmony and theory. She’s also determined to write more horns and background vocals into her arrangements. “I want to expand the palette that I have for arrangements, and also home in on this counterpoint concept with the bass and voice—trying to use it in a way that’s effective, trying to integrate that into song forms and into performance.”

FASHION DESINGER...
SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST FATHER...
DAMON DASH' WIFE & MOTHER...

Who is RACHEL ROY?

Rachel Roy is a Manhattan-based fashion designer. She first became well-known as the romantic interest of Damon Dash, the hip hop businessman.[1] They married on January 15, 2005 and have two daughters named Ava and Tallulah Ruth.

PERSONAL BACKGROUND

Her father is a first generation Indian (Bengali) immigrant and her mother is of Dutch ancestry.[1] Roy grew up in Northern California in January 1975, and graduated from Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland with a degree in communications.[1] Her primary reason for attending this Christian university was due to the demands of her parents, particularly her father, who is a Seventh-day Adventist. Dash and Roy have welcomed a daughter, Ava. Tallulah Ruth was born May 13, 2008.

FASHION CAREER

Rachel's first job in fashion was at a Contempo Casuals clothing outlet in her hometown at age 14. After college, she came to New York City, where she worked as a stylist for magazines and music videos.[2] She became an intern at the urban fashion line Rocawear, where she rose to become creative director of the women's and children's divisions and also met her future husband. In 2005 she launched her own eponymous fashion collection. In early 2006 Roy received a Bollywood industry award for her contribution to American fashion.[1] Rachel has also seen publicity through the teen market, including at Teen Vogue magazine. In their April 2009 issue, Rachel does a “how-to” where she transforms a regular t-shirt into a punky prom dress.[3]
